Can I print a creation in square (8x8 or 12x12) format?

Our square format designs (12x12 or 8x8) are perfect for creating keepsakes! To learn more about our Build-a-Book feature and other printing options, click here.

Please note: Printing at-home or to a store is reserved for Club Smilebox members only. Our Doorstep Direct print delivery is free for all users and designs.

To find printable square format designs (Scrapbook or Photo Album formats), search our Design Catalog for the keyword "square format" shown below.

Printing in 12x12 format is available but resolution issues can occur depending on the printer quality and resolution of your photos. Smilebox recommends limiting square designs to print at 8x8 inches.

Please keep in mind when printing that:

1. All images are resized when imported into the Smilebox photo well. The image’s longest side is limited to 1350 pixels and the short side is scaled down accordingly. For example, a 3000 x 3000 pixel image imported to Smilebox would become 1350 x 1350 pixels

2. If you opt to zoom your pictures, your resolution will decrease depending on how much you zoom

3. Your printer quality

These factors can impact the quality of a printed Smilebox.

Printing at-home

The resolution (pixels per inch) of a printed creation depends on the size chosen. To get the best quality image, we recommend:

  • Printing a smaller format
  • Using the “Quality” setting on your printer
  • Using premium photo paper

Printing saved .jpg images

After saving the creation as .jpg images, the resolution (pixels per inch) of a printed design depends on the size chosen, your printer quality, and the third party software you are using to print.

For the best results, Smilebox recommends that you limit the print size of images to:

  • 8 x 8 inches or smaller for square formats
  • 5 x 7 inches or smaller for rectangular formats
  • You can print at larger sizes, but the results may not be the quality you require.

We also suggest that you first try a black-and-white print on regular print paper to ensure that your settings are correct before you print in color on high-quality photo paper.

Another alternative is to print using our PASH service, as we offer 12X12 format printing, as well as 16X20 for of our non-square format creations.
